The city of Detroit, Michigan was once the epitome of automotive and industrial excellence. Through the years, the city has lost residents, companies, and was over-run by political corruption that now, to most of the world, defines who we are – washed up. But over the last few years, Detroit has begun to be revitalized by the presence of young artists. Whether that be working on sets of featured films, graffiti artists turning the run down and ugly into art, or just being present through it all, Detroit has begun to change for the better. This series is focused on Downtown Detroit – The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
Learn MoreOne of my main photography projects is Metro Scene Detroit (link here). We are a digital media publication focused on covering the music scene not only locally, but nationwide. As touring bands come into to town, or as the smaller, lesser known local acts take the stage, we are there to immortalize them through photo, and often get to speak with them about their music and their career.
Learn MoreDuane Michals once said, “I think photographs should be provocative and not tell you what you already know. It takes no great powers or magic to reproduce somebody’s face in a photograph. The magic is seeing people in new ways.” I take these words with me whenever I do a portrait shoot. Portraits are about more than just having a picture to give to your friends and family. Portraits should tell a story, ask some questions, while answering others.
